US shoots down drone directed towards Al Tanf Base in Syria

Damascus: – The US military informed that it shot down a drone launched to attack the Al Tanf military base in Syria. Two drones had been launched to attack this base, which lies near the Iraq border. The US military informed that the other retreated after one drone was shot down. There are nearly 200 US soldiers stationed at the Al Tanf Military Base close to both Jordan and Iraq borders. The US agencies spotted two drones that had entered the Al Tanf Base’s airspace on Tuesday evening. Captain Bill Urban, the spokesman of the US Central Command, said that one of the drones, which came close to the military base, was shot down.

Once the first drone was shot down, the other drone retreated. The US official said no information is available if the drone shot down or the other drone carried any explosives. A few weeks ago, the Al Tanf base had come under attack with many drones loaded with explosives. Although no US casualties were reported in the attack, certain damage was caused. After the drone attack, there were also rocket attacks on the base.

It is suspected that Iran or an Iran affiliated group is behind these attacks. Iran supported groups have attempted to target the US military bases in Iraq in the past. Injuries to US soldiers also had been reported in these attacks. Al Tanf is a substantial US military base and is used for training and providing other assistance to the anti-IS groups. But this base is obstructing the activities of Iran and the Assad regime in Syria and efforts are being made to get the United States to vacate this base. Analysts claim that these drone attacks were also part of the same efforts.
