In an interview on US news channel CNN on Sunday, Secretary of State Blinken was asked a question by referring to Panetta’s statement. Blinken endorsed the view of the former Secretary of Defence and claimed that Putin’s goal was to rebuild the Soviet Union. Blinken also accused Putin of re-establishing influence in countries that were a part of the Soviet Union.

‘Creating spheres of influence in this way is an act that promotes instability and conflict and could lead to a world war. Therefore, the United States will never tolerate such spheres of influence,’ Secretary of State Blinken said. He also claimed that the United States is willing to make all possible efforts to defuse the tension created over Ukraine, but the efforts will succeed if they receive a response from the other side. The US Secretary of State also hinted that talks with Russia on Monday were unlikely to yield concrete results. He also alleged that efforts provoked Ukraine by placing a gun on its head.

Founded in the 1920s, the Soviet Union consisted of 15 countries, including Russia. The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, following the Cold War between the United States and the USSR following World War II. Subsequently, through NATO, the United States and European countries succeeded in drawing some of these countries to their side. At the same time, through the ‘Commonwealth of Independent States’, Russia sought to keep eight of the disintegrating countries in its sphere of influence.

The United States and European countries claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to increase his influence further in these countries. But Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia refused to participate.
