Kyiv/Brussels: – Over 2.8 million Ukrainian citizens have arrived in Europe after Russia started its military campaign against Ukraine 20 days ago. More than 1.7 million refugees have entered Poland alone and fears of this number increasing further are being expressed. While the neighbouring Ukrainian countries are accepting refugees in large numbers, Germany has appealed to stop the special trains for Ukrainian refugees.
Moreover, Russia started military action against Ukraine at the end of last month. The intensity of the Russian attacks is increasing by the day and Ukrainian citizens are leaving the country in large numbers. Russia has initiated attacks even in western Ukraine and people from this region also have started leaving the country. Thousands of citizens are trying to flee the country using any available means from Kharkiv, Mariupol, Odessa, Lviv, and the capital Kyiv.
Serpentine queues are seen on the borders of Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova. Polish agencies informed that more than 1.7 million Ukrainian refugees are in Poland alone. Some Ukrainian citizens have gone further to Germany and the United Kingdom. Although it cannot be predicted how many people will leave Ukraine, the US and European officials had claimed that the figure could be close to 5 million.
Meanwhile, International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the Russian attack would have a massive impact on the Ukrainian economy. The IMF warned that the Ukrainian economy would decline by 35% this year. Given the Russian attack, there has been a decline in the Ukrainian economy of 10%. The IMF and other countries have announced assistance worth billions of dollars for Ukraine to recover from the crisis. This includes the ‘Emergency Fund’ of $1.4 billion announced by the IMF.
