Abu Dhabi: South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol is visiting the UAE. International media and analysts are keenly watching the developments in the tour. South Korea is eager to supply advanced weapons and defence equipment to the UAE. At the same time, it is claimed that the President of South Korea will try to secure the import of fuel from the UAE. International analysts claim that since Iran seized a South Korean vessel in 2021, South Korea wants to strengthen its friendship and cooperation with countries in the Middle East.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of UAE warmly welcomed the President of South Korea at the Abu Dhabi airport. Also, the welcome ceremony’s optics indicated future long-term cooperation and engagement between the two countries. South Korea imports less than 10 per cent of its energy requirement from the UAE. Due to the Russia-Ukraine war and ongoing geopolitical tensions, South Korea’s president is looking to secure more gas supplies from the UAE and increase trade with the UAE.
Analysts from the Middle East are closely watching the discussion on cooperation for weapons and defence materials. Last year, the UAE purchased the KM-SAM air defence system from South Korea. This deal, worth around $3.5 billion, set the foundation for enhancing future defence cooperation between the two countries.
