'spy base'Washington/Beijing/Havana – A White House official has admitted that China has a ‘spy base’ in Cuba since 2019. A few days ago, a top US daily published the news that Cuba has permitted China to use its land for its spy base. Meanwhile, a strong reaction has emerged from China and Cuba. Some US officials have raised doubts about the role of the Biden administration after making contradictory claims on the issue. However, the White House official’s admission has confirmed China’s activities in Cuba.

China is establishing a spy base in Cuba to monitor the activities of the US Navy in the Atlantic Ocean. The Communist government of Cuba granted permission to China and made the agreement required for it, claimed the top US newspaper, the ‘Wall Street Journal’. China is establishing an ‘electronic facility’ for espionage 160 km from the US state of Florida. For this, Cuba will receive billions of dollars in aid, the Wall Street Journal said in this report.

After this, there was a backlash in the US political and administrative circles. The US lawmakers had aggressively demanded the US Congress receive full information on the matter. In such a situation, some officials of the Biden administration had stated that new information about China’s ongoing activities in China or Cuba was not available.

On the other hand, China’s Foreign Ministry categorically rejected the report of a spy base in Cuba. The US newspaper’s claims are irresponsible and baseless, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman criticised. At the same time, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cosio has rejected the accusations against Cuba by saying that they had not granted any permission to China for the spy base. The White House official’s statement, which has come after this about China’s spy base, is noteworthy.

A senior White House official provided information on a Chinese spy base in Cuba on condition of anonymity. China has started spying from Cuba since 2019. In 2019, China modernised its spy base in Cuba. A White House official explained that all the details about it are in the records of the US intelligence agency.

China has gradually increased its influence in Latin American countries, this information was revealed last month. In this, China has established a space centre in Argentina, which can be used to target the capabilities of the United States, the US Department of Defense warned.
