Shillong: Drishti Rajkhowa, the Deputy Commander of United Liberation Front of Assam – Independent (ULFA-I), the main terrorist organisation in the northeast, surrendered in front of the security forces. Drishti Rajkhowa was the second in command in ULFA-I after Paresh Barua. Therefore, this is considered to be a major jolt to ULFA-I. The intelligence agencies were tracking Rajkhowa for nine years.
In the last three decades, some terrorists from ULFA, operating in northeast India, also have surrendered. One group from this organisation is also participating in peace talks with the government for the last ten years. But Paresh Barua, unwilling to give up the path of violence, broke away and formed a new group by the name ULFA-I. Paresh Barua is currently hiding in China and is carrying out all the activities from there. Intermittently, he also makes anti-India statements. But his close confidante, Drishti Rajkhowa, was controlling the terror operations in India and Myanmar.
The military intelligence was tracking Rajkhowa for the last nine years. Rajkhowa’s name features in the most wanted list of terrorists in northeast India. His surrender is considered to be a major jolt for ULFA-I. Rajkhowa is currently in the custody of the military intelligence department, and he is being brought to Assam. His surrender is looked at as a major success in the government’s efforts to dismantle terrorism in the northeast. It is claimed that his surrender is the culmination of the efforts of military intelligence over the last few years.
Four of his accomplices also surrendered with Rajkhowa. SS Corporal Vedanta, Yaseen Asom, Rupajyoti Asom and Mithun Asom are the names of the accomplices. A huge haul of arms also has been seized in action. Meanwhile, ULFA-I chief Paresh Barua called a local TV channel and told them that Rajkhowa surrendered because of the sickness of his wife and some of his own health issues.
