Jerusalem/Kyiv: By claiming that Russia is massacring the Ukrainian population in a way similar to Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Russian President is preparing for a genocide of the Ukrainian population, the Ukrainian President tried to get support from Israel. But the Israeli leaders have criticised that the Ukrainian President is trying to reduce the gruesomeness of the Jewish Genocide at the hands of Nazi Germany with his irresponsible statements. The Israeli leaders lashed out that Ukraine would get whatever assistance possible from Israel, but there is no need to cite the atrocities against the Jewish people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Israeli Senate through a video. President Zelensky accepted that Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had given a proposal for a ceasefire. Zelensky criticised Israel, asking ‘Why did Israel not supply weapons to Ukraine in the war going on for so long?’, ‘Why hasn’t Israel imposed sanctions against Russia?’ and ‘Why isn’t Israel pressurising the Russian entrepreneurs?’.
The Ukrainian President compared Russia of today with Nazi Germany from the second world war times. Nazi Germany had perpetrated a genocide of Jews during the second world war. Zelensky accused Russia is carrying out a similar genocide of the Ukrainian population. Zelensky accused Russian President Putin is speaking the language of Nazi Dictator Hitler. Israeli leaders, media and analysts are pointing out that the Ukrainian President did not present any firm evidence or details. Zelensky demanded that Israel should support Ukraine, leaving its neutral stand at a time when history is being repeated. Zelensky made an emotional appeal that ‘The Israeli Iron Dome air defence system will help protect the Ukrainian population and the Jewish people.’ Ukrainian President reminded that he himself is a Jew. Zelensky also claimed that 80 years ago, the Ukrainian population saved the Jewish people from the clutches of Nazi Germany.
The Israeli Prime Minister avoided commenting on any of the aggressive statements made by the Ukrainian President. Israeli Prime Minister Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid reminded ‘Israel has helped Ukraine during the conflict to the extent that no other country has. This includes providing humanitarian aid and accepting Ukrainian refugees.’ The Israeli government clarified that Israel would continue to provide whatever possible aid to Ukraine in the coming times.
But Israeli lawmakers and leaders of the ruling party lashed out at the statements made by Zelensky. ‘The criticism made by the Ukrainian President on Israel and the expectations are acceptable. But comparing the German Genocide of Jewish people with the war with Russia is a disgraceful attempt to reduce the intensity and gruesomeness of the Genocide carried out by Nazi Germany. The Israeli lawmakers also reminded the stark reality that Ukrainian citizens had participated in the Jewish Genocide during the second world war.
Meanwhile, Israel has adopted a neutral stand in the Russia-Ukraine war. Israel has avoided taking a stand that could affect its relations with Russia. Israel has dismissed the demand made by even the United States in this respect.
