Jakarta: Militaries of the United States and Indonesia commenced a joint war exercise on Wednesday. Militaries of Japan, Australia and Singapore, will also participate in these exercises being held on Sumatra Island. The importance of these joint exercises between the United States and Indonesia has increased further due to rising tensions with China in the Indo-Pacific sector.
Moreover, the US House of Representatives speaker, Nancy Pelosi, recently visited Taiwan. China, which criticised Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, saying that Taiwan is a sovereign Chinese territory, has announced a major war exercise in the Taiwan Strait. China will be holding live-fire exercises at six locations around Taiwan. Earlier, China had threatened to shoot down aircraft of Pelosi travelling to Taiwan. A threat was issued to attack Taiwan. In this scenario, joint war exercises have started between the United States and Indonesia at a location close to Taiwan.
Furthermore, General Charles Flynn, a senior official in the US Pacific Command, reached Sumatra Island on Wednesday. General Flynn met the Indonesian Military Chief General Andika Perkasa and inspected the military units participating in the exercises.
Meanwhile, Chief of US Defence forces General Mark Milley declared that Indonesia is a vital and long-standing ally of the United States in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has always strongly criticised the Chinese claims regarding the South China Sea region.
