Copenhagen: US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford and Russia’s Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov are scheduled to meet in Finland on Friday. The Finnish military gave information about this meeting, scheduled to take place on Friday in their country. This meeting between the senior United States and Russian military officials seems to have been arranged on an urgent basis. However, neither the reason for the meeting nor any other details have been revealed.
Currently, The United States and Russia are at loggerheads on various fronts. The United States has imposed strict sanctions against Russia and has warned to target the countries which have trade or military cooperation with Russia, with sanctions. The United States has expelled the Russian diplomats from the country, accusing a Russian hand in the killing of the former Russian agent Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom. Russia had retaliated by expelling US diplomats in the country. It is claimed that what is happening in Syria is actually a war between Russia and the United States.
The analysts are expressing concern that a conflict can be sparked at any moment between the US and Russian military in Syria which could explode into a World War. Claims have also been made that this conflict has already started indirectly and both countries are targeting each other’s interests in Syria. At the same time, the NATO war exercise along the Russian border has further added to the tension. Thus, it is clear that the United States and Russia are fighting multiple battles against each other concurrently.
While there is a conflict between the two countries on economic, military and strategic levels, the scheduled meeting in Finland between US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford and the Russian Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov attracts attention of the experts. The Finnish army who revealed the information of the meeting did not disclose any further details. The army informed that the initiative for the meeting came from both the countries. It is also being said that after this meeting between the US and Russian military officials, both the countries will have independent meetings with the Finnish military officials.
The sudden nature of the meeting between the senior military officials of the US and Russia who have been threatening each other of a war and its dire consequences, indicates a possibility of a serious issue behind it. Moreover, this meeting clearly seems to have been arranged suddenly and without any former planning. There is minimal possibility that the United States or Russia will reveal any information even after the meeting. However, it is already apparent that this urgent and very important meeting will have major influence on future developments.
